A local Awami League leader and his son were detained from Moulvibazar's Kamalganj area early Thursday for embezzling the rice of Food-friendly Programme and selling it in the black market.

A team of RAB-9 of Sreemangal Camp also seized 210 kilogrammes of rice from Abu Abdullah, 55, a dealer of rice meant for selling at Tk10 per kg, and his son Azizur Rahman, 28.

Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anwar Hossain Shamim, captain of RAB-9 Sreemangal Camp, said they had been getting complaints from people about the misappropriation of the rice.

Abdullah had been embezzling the rice by copying the fingerprints of the beneficiaries of the Food-friendly Programme for a long time, he said.

So, around 12.15am in the night, the team of the RAB went to Islampur union located in Kamalganj's borader area and detained them.

Legal actions would be taken against them, said the captain.
