A high school is being converted to a 50-bed coronavirus hospital at the Patenga area in Chattogram and is set to be operational from Saturday (June 13).

The locals are providing financial assistance to help converting the Patenga high school at Kathgor More of the city to "Port EPZ Patenga Corona Hospital" and currently all the necessary equipments are being set up in the high school premises to help provide treatment to patients.

Dr Hasan Ahmed, the key initiator of the project, said, "I have provided an official application to the civil surgeon and the director of health for the approval of the hospital. They have also agreed to come on board."

"Besides them, we also have communicated with the councilor of the area and the president of the school board regarding the matter and they are also helping us with this project," added Dr Hasan.

Dr Hasan also said that currently 6 doctors have agreed to work in the hospital and they are trying to bring in more doctors.

Many volunteers and nurses are interested to work in the hospital as well.

The areas between South Halisahar and South Patenga have around seven lakh residents but there are no hospitals in the area to provide treatment to such a big population. The residents have to travel almost 20km to get medical assistance at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital.
