37 deaths from Covid-19 signals another rise

The fatality curve of Covid-19 has risen in the country once again, with newly reported 37 deaths in the last 24 hours till 8am Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Bangladesh reported 30 deaths from the virus, which was 32 a day ago. However, the overall death rate remained stable at 1.56%.

At the same time, the country witnessed a steep hike in fresh cases with 1,608 newly diagnosed Covid patients in the past 24 hours, with an infection rate of 7.83%.

The cases of infection were recorded 1,272 with a rate of 7.55% on Tuesday, while the number was only 698 a day ago.

The overall death toll now stands at 12,248 and the number of Covid-19 cases now stands at 7,83,737 in the country, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) today.

Among the latest day's victims, 24 were men and 13 were women. All of them died in different hospitals across the country.

Moreover, 16 of them hailed from Dhaka, 15 from Chattogram, two each from Khulna and Sylhet and one each from Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions.

A total of 20,528 samples were tested in 478 labs across the country in the past 24 hours.

Also, 1,923 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 7,26,132 with a 92.65% recovery rate.

The country's maiden cases were reported on 8 March last year and the first death from the virus was reported on 18 March.

In India, nearly two-thirds of people tested have shown exposure to the novel coronavirus, a chain of private laboratories said on Wednesday, indicating a runaway spread of the virus as the daily death toll rose to a record 4,529.

Besides, the neighbouring country reported 267,334 new daily infections today, taking its tally to 25.5 million, with a death toll of 283,248, health ministry data showed.

Covid-19 has claimed 3,420,795 lives worldwide and infected 164,963,559 so far, according to the data provided by Worldometer.
