Bangladesh logged 24 more deaths from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours till Wednesday 8am, taking the total death count to 5,723. 

According to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 1,545 people tested positive for Covid-19 during this time. The total number of people infected by the virus in the country now stands at 393,131.

Among the deceased, 19 were men and five were women. 23 of them died in different hospitals while one died at home.

Seventeen of the deceased hailed from Dhaka, three from Chattogram, two from Rajshahi, and one each from Khulna and Rangpur division.

A total of 14,086 samples were tested in 110 labs across the country in the last 24 hours. So far, 2,206,411 samples have been tested across the country.

The latest day's infection rate was 10.97% of the total tests, though the overall rate in the country till date was 17.82%. The death rate stands at 1.46%.

Meanwhile, 1,704 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 308,845 with a 78.56% recovery rate.

The gender breakdown of Covid-19 victims shows that 4,404 of the total deceased were men, and 1,319 were women.

The country's maiden cases were reported on March 8 this year and the first death from the virus was reported on March 18.
