Bangladesh logged 23 more deaths from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours till Sunday 8am.
The country's death toll from the virus now stands at 5,803, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
In the meantime, 1,308 people tested positive for Covid-19. The number of novel coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 398,815.
The latest day's infection rate was 11.78% of the total tests, though the overall rate in the country till date was 17.67%. The death rate stands at 1.46%.
Speaking about the low infection rate in recent days, Professor Nazrul Islam, virologist and former vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, told The Business Standard, "There should not be any dilly-dallying because of the declining infection rate or the low death rate."
"Before the second wave arrives, it has to be ensured that people are wearing masks. Hospitals need to be provided with oxygen and high-flow nasal cannula. Otherwise, we will have no choice but to get frustrated again," he added.
Among the latest day's victims, 19 were men and four were women.
Moreover, 19 of them hailed from Dhaka, and one each from Chattogram, Rajshahi, Khulna and Rangpur divisions.
All the deceased died in different hospitals across the country.
Meanwhile, 11,103 samples were tested in 111 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 2,257,589 samples have been tested in the country so far.
Also, 1,544 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 315,107 with a 79.01% recovery rate.
The gender breakdown of Covid-19 victims shows that 4,471 of the total deceased were men and 1,332 were women.
The country's maiden cases were reported on March 8 this year and the first death from the virus was reported on March 18.
