Internet users jump by 34 lakh in March

The country's Internet subscriber base grew by 34 lakh newly registered users in March compared to the previous month.

The total number of Internet subscribers reached 11.61 crore in March; it was 11.27 lakh in February, says a report of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

A large part of the new Internet customers consists cell phone users  – 31 lakh – who recently subscribed to Internet services of different mobile operators, whereas broadband Internet providers received only 2 lakh new users.

During the period, mobile operators also registered 12 lakh new SIM users.

The BTRC report says the total number of mobile SIM users rose to 17.46 crore in March – from 17.33 crore in February. 

The telecom regulator disclosed the subscriber number considering the biometrically verified subscriptions who have any activity including voice, data and SMS transactions at least once in the preceding 90 days.

Among all mobile operators, Robi Axiata Ltd, the second largest operator in the country, received the highest 4 lakh new users while market leader Grameenphone and No 3 Banglalink each got 3 lakh new subscribers. 

Currently, Grameenphone's total subscribers stands at 8.07 crore while Robi has 5.19 crore, Banglalink 3.62 crore, and state-owned Teletalk 56 lakh.
