Human chain in protest of Sanofi worker’s death

More than 300 employees of Sanofi Bangladesh Limited employees arranged a human chain on Thursday in front of the National Press Club demanding justice for the death of one of their colleagues, Khorshed Alam Bhuiyan who died on Monday.

Protesting employees alleged that Khorshed, 50, suffered a stroke and heart attack because he could not bear the deception, threats and unbearable stress from the management in response to the ongoing movement to demand compensation.

Nuruzzaman Raju, president of Sanofi Bangladesh Limited Workers Employees Association, said, "We have been agitating for compensation for a long time. At present, about 400 members are on hunger strike. Many are becoming physically and mentally ill."

"The management is shuffling excuses and threatening those taking part in the hunger strike. Khorshed Alam had a stroke as he could not bear the unbearable mental stress. It's a kind of murder, we want justice for it," he added.

Sanjeev Chakraborty, general secretary of the association, said, "Many of us are physically and mentally shattered in the movement and more incidents like Khorshed's death may happen. We want justice and compensation. Otherwise, we shall continue the movement till death."

Workers have been on a hunger strike in front of Sanofi Bangladesh's head office in Segunbagicha since 26 January demanding compensation.
