BCCI election: Nomination papers submitted
As of now, Md Jasim Uddin, vice-chairman of Bengal Group of Industries, is the only candidate for the presidential post
Eighty-four candidates have submitted nomination papers to compete to become directors of the board of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) for the 2021-23 term.
The board will have 80 members, including the president.
As of now, Md Jasim Uddin, vice-chairman of Bengal Group of Industries, is the only candidate for the presidential post.
According to the schedule, the elections to the posts of directors will be held on 5 May. Seventeen people will be chosen from the chamber and association each of the FBCCI for direct appointment as directors, while 23 others from each group will get the posts of directors through election.
May 30 is the deadline for the submission of nomination papers. Prof Ali Ashraf, MP, is the chairman of the election management board.
The presidential candidate of the upcoming election, Jasim said he wanted to work to bring businessmen together in order to help attain the goals set by the government.
"I want to strengthen unity among all businessmen – small or big," he told journalists after submitting his nomination paper.
Jasim is chairman of Bengal Commercial Bank Limited and Desh General Insurance Company Limited, alongside being chairman of the Bengal Group. He is the former president of Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
The incumbent president, Sheikh Fazle Fahim was elected unopposed for the 2019-21 term.
