Youth killed, 60 injured in Rangpur train crash

A youth was killed and around 60 others were injured as the engine of the Uttarbanga Mail train hit one of its coaches at Kaunia rail station in Rangpur on Thursday.

The deceased is Apel Mahmud, 20, a student of the Gaibandha Community Nursing College.

"A Panchagarh-bound Uttarbanga Mail from Shantahar inadvertently hit its one coach when the driver was turning the engine at the junction at around 4:20pm, leaving one dead on the spot," said Abdur Rashid, the station master of the Kaunia junction.

"The middle portion of the coach-1 and the coach-2 was totally damaged in the incident," witnesses said.

Two units of Rangpur and Kaunia fire service rushed to the spot for the rescue work. A dead body was recovered from the site," said Md Shamsujjoha, the deputy director of the Rangpur fire service and civil defence.

Atikur Rahman, the duty doctor at the Kaunia Health Complex, said, "Thirty people have taken primary treatment from here [the hospital]. But another 15, who are in serious condition, have been sent to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment."
