Police arrested a youth for allegedly raping a third-grader in Sonargaon upazila under Narayanganj district.

The arrestee is Siyam, a resident of Phawsa village in Araihazar upazila of the district. He used to live in his mother-in-law's house in Bashiragaon village of Sonargaon.

On January 7, Siyam raped the girl after taking her to a desolate place alluring her with Tk10.

On January 8, the victim's father lodged a case against Siyam with Sonargaon police station over the alleged rape of his daughter.

However, locals said the victim's family first complained to some local elders and demanded justice for the victim. But they rather threatened the victim's family instead of bringing the culprit under justice.

However, the local leaders tried to kill the matter proposing the victim's family with the wedding cost for the girl.

Deprived of justice, the victim's family decided to go to the police.

Sonargaon police station Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman said police held Siyam immediately after the victim's father had filed the case.

Siyam was sent to a court on Friday.
