An allegation of stealing a gold chain was brought against her

A woman allegedly committed suicide after killing her four-year-old daughter in Sharsha upazila under Jashore district following an allegation of stealing a gold chain.

Family members found Zulekha Khatun, 24, who had a seven-month pregnancy, and her daughter Amena Khatun dead on Sunday morning.

According to the woman's relative Tarikul Islam, Ramchandrapur village's Jully Begum, who lost her gold-made chain around seven months back, snatched a gold chain from Zulekha's daughter on Saturday claiming that the chain belongs to her. Jully also rebuked Amena who went to a local shop to buy chocolate.

After the incident, Amena shared the matter with her mother Zulekha - who later got involved into an altercation with Jully over the incident.

Finding no response on Sunday morning, neighbours broke the door and found them dead.

Al Mamun, husband of Zulekha, said Zulekha received a gold chain from her mother in last Ramadan, and he is well informed about the matter.

His mother-in-law was also set to visit them in order to prove that she gave the chain as present to Zulekha, added Mamun, who came to know about his wife and daughter's death after he went to attend his work as a mason.

Police recovered the dead bodies and sent to Jessore 250 Bed General Hospital for autopsy.

Zuel Imran, ASP of Navaron Circle Police said that Jully Begum and her mother were under police custody for initial interrogation. No case has been filed yet, he added.
