Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Friday hoped to increase the number of taxpayers in the country, in a bid to accelerate development.
"There are 4 crore middleclass people in the country who do not pay taxes. If we could bring them under tax net, the rates would go down," said the minister, while addressing journalists after an event at Kumudini Complex, Tangail.
Mustafa Kamal attended the function to commemorate the 123rd birth anniversary of philanthropist Ranadaprasad Saha. The event was arranged by Kumudini Welfare Trust.
"An economy cannot sustain if there is corruption. Since we hope to achieve sustainable development, corruption will not be tolerated. We will enforce the zero-tolerance policy announced by the prime minister," he added.
During his visit, the finance minister also visited Kumudini Women's Medical College and Hospital, Bharateswari Homes and Kumudini Nursing College, among other institutions run by the trust.
