Why GM Quader’s role as JP chairman not illegal: High Court

The High Court on Tuesday asked why Ghulam Muhammed Quader's role as chairman of the Jatiya Party, currently the opposition party in parliament, should not be declared illegal.
The court ordered a response within the next four weeks, making the Election Commission and GM Quader respondents to the rule. Lawyer Abdul Matin Khashru confirmed this to The Business Standard.
A vacation bench of the High Court comprising of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam issued the rule after holding a first hearing on a writ plea filed by a Jatiya Party leader Mohammad Zahir Uddin.
Senior lawyer Abdul Matin Khashru stood for the writ petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Noor Us Sadique represented the state.
Abdul Matin said the chairman of Jatiya Party has to be elected according to the party constitution. But Quader is playing role of chairman without being elected. His holding of the position is therefore illegal.
