Water transport workers have started countrywide strike to press home their 15-point demand including increasing wage and allowance, stopping of extortion and criminal activities on the internal route.

Bangladesh Noujan Sramik Federation enforced the countrywide strike early today.

However, Omar Faruk, president of Bangladesh Water Transport Sramik League, said, "Passenger-carrying ships will remain operational but no ships carrying goods will be operating to and from the ports."

No launches left this morning from capital's Sadarghat launch terminal that is connected to 43 naval routes across the country.

"We have been staging movement for a long time to fulfil our demands, but did not see any fruitful results. So, we have no other way except calling the strike," said Shah Alam, president of the federation.

Shah Alam also threatened that the strike will be continued until their demands are met.
