“We made sacrifices, we were ready to give up our lives”
Victory Day
On December 16, 1971, I was in Assam, India, for training. We came back to Bangladesh after three or four days. When we heard the news that Bangladesh had won the Liberation War, we were ecstatic.
Words would not be sufficient to describe my feelings, my emotions. We were elated!
Initially, the surrender was supposed to be under the UN, but then General Jacob insisted on a public surrender.
From the moment Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his speech on March 7, and even before that, we knew what was coming for us and we were preparing for it.
We knew we had a war to fight.
We fought for nine months but did not know that the fight would be over in nine months. So when we heard the news of victory, it was an unprecedented moment for us.
Everything we dreamt of, everything we fought for, our dreams and our hope were finally turned into reality. We made sacrifices, we were ready to give up our lives, and all were for this victory, for Bangladesh and its people.
