Two children drowned in a pond while playing together at Srinibasdi village in Araihazar upazila  in Narayanganj on Sunday morning.

The deceased are Sumaiya, 4, daughter of Kauser, a Malaysian expatriate from Srinibasdi village in the upazila and Arifa, 6, daughter of Bashed, resident of the same village.

Sumaiya was a nursery student at the local Sun-Moon Kindergarten School and Arifa was a class 2 student at Srinibasdi Government Primary School.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Araihazar Police Station Nazrul Islam said "The two children went out to play together in the morning. To play they go near a pond next to the house. They fell into the pond and drowned."

When the people around saw what was going on, they went down to the pond and searched for the two children. After a long search, the locals found the two drowned children at around 12 noon and took them to the Upazila Health Complex. Emergency department doctor Abdullah Al Kamal declared them dead on arrival. After receiving the news, Araihazar police went there, the OC added.

The OC also said "their families had no complaints, besides, they were too young. That is why at the request of the relatives, the bodies were handed over to both the families without autopsy for humanitarian reasons."
