Buses to operate under single company on Ghatarchar-Kanchpur route

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has said the Ghatarchar-Motijheel bus route will be extended to Kanchpur.

Buses on the route will be operated under a single company, he added, emerging out of the 15th meeting of the Bus Route Rationalisation Committee at Nagar Bhaban in the capital on Tuesday.

The mayor said at first, buses will be operated under a joint venture pilot project. Later, a company will be formed under which all the buses on this route will be operated.

"We have selected 34 spots on the route to construct bus bays, and there will be some bus stops also. We need some places for this reason. We are in discussion with related organisations in this regard," he added.

"In addition, we have finalised the location of four inter-district bus terminals outside Dhaka City from 10 primarily selected sites.
These are Birulia, Hemayetpur, Baghai in Keraniganj and Kanchpur.

"Once these terminals are constructed, Gabtoli and Sayedabad will be used as city bus stands which, we hope, would reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

"In order to bring discipline on city roads, no BRTC bus would be parked on roads at night from 28 February. They would be parked in BRTC depots. BRTC authorities have assured us.

"Next meeting of Bus Rationalisation Committee will be held on 23 February to evaluate the overall progress as well as to form policies.

In the meeting Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam said, "To make Dhaka free from water-logging and traffic jam, the two city corporations are working together."

Notable, DSCC earlier undertook an initiative to reduce Dhaka's bus routes from 291 to 42. Under the initiative, it was planned to operate Dhaka's buses under one company.
