Inter-district buses will no longer be allowed to enter Dhaka metropolis: Taposh

The inter-district buses will no longer be allowed to enter the Dhaka Metropolitan area through the implementation of bus route rationalisation, said Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

The buses will leave for their destinations after dropping off passengers at inter-district bus terminals to reduce traffic pressure in the capital, Taposh said at the 13th meeting of the Bus Route Rationalisation committee held at Nagar Bhaban on Tuesday, according to a press release. 

The DSCC mayor also said that the North City Corporation has only Mohakhali and Gabtali and the South City Corporation has only Sayedabad bus terminals.

"As the terminals are unable to accommodate all the buses, it causes traffic jams in large-scale," he added.   

Mentioning that bus route rationalisation activities will be apparent within the next year, Dhaka South mayor said, a preliminary proposal to reduce the number of bus routes from 291 to 42 cluster routes in the capital, and to form 22 companies with 2,500 bus owners, has been submitted to the Bus Route Rationalisation Committee.  

At the meeting, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam was connected through the online platform. He also expressed his valuable thoughts at the meeting, according to the press statement.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, BRTA Chairman Nur Mohammad Majumder, BRTC Chairman Mohammad Ehsane Elahi, RAJUK Chairman Mohammad Saeed Nur Alam, Member Secretary of Bus Route Rationalisation Committee, and DTCA Executive Director Khandaker Rakibur Rahman, among others, participated in the event, according to the press release.  

The next meeting of the committee is scheduled for 8 December, it added.
