Passenger trains to resume operation at full capacity from Wednesday

The Bangladesh Railway is set to run trains at their full capacity from Wednesday maintaining health guidelines as the government relaxes its restriction on the country's rail services. 

Half of the tickets will be sold at the stations and the rest will be available online.

The railways ministry has decided to allow trains to carry passengers at their full capacity from Wednesday, said Sharif Alam, public relations officer at the ministry.

"A decision allowing the sale of 100 percent train tickets maintaining health guidelines has been taken," he told The Business Standard on Tuesday.

According to railway sources, 218 trains will run on different routes from Wednesday.

The government initially shut passenger trains to contain the spread of coronavirus.

It eventually allowed trains to run from May 31 on condition that they follow health guidelines and carry 50% passengers.

Later, the non-stop Sonar Bangla Express in the Dhaka-Chattogram route restarted operation and three commuter trains also resumed services in this phase.

Thirteen pairs of trains also resumed operation on August 16, and previously, 16 pairs of trains were running. And it reached 48 pairs in total after August 27.
