Traffic jam on Bangabandhu Bridge as 2 killed in road accident

Traffic jam broke out on the Bangabandhu Bridge after two people died in a fiery crash as a tractor and bus collided early Sunday night.

The deceased were identified as Majnu, 33, of Dimla upazila, Nilphamari, and Nazrul Islam, 34, son of Ramzan Ali of the same area.

Seven other people were also injured in the accident and have been shifted to Tangail General Hospital.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Sirajganj General Hospital.

At around 3 am, a passenger bus of Shyamoli Paribahan pushed a tractor from behind in the North Bengal-bound lane on Bangabandhu Bridge, according to the Traffic Control Room (TCR).

The tractor overturned and caught fire. At that time, two persons in the tractor were burned to death on the spot.

Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station, said, "Vehicles have been plying the roadway since the fire broke out last night."

"A one-lane traffic jam from Bangabandhu Bridge West Toll Plaza to Kaddar Junction was prevalent till 8 am," he added. 

However, Ariful Rahman, sub-inspector of Bangabandhu Bridge West Police Station, said, "Traffic started moving after the two vehicles involved in the accident were removed."
