Tk60cr for boosting security at airports

The government on Tuesday approved a Tk59.62 crore project to step up security measures at the country’s three international airports. 

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) will provide Tk54.10 crore for the project while the rest of the fund comes from the Civil Aviation Authority. 

Starting in July this year, the project work is expected to complete by December 2020. 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said modernisation of security equipment is badly needed for the airports – Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram and Osmani International Airport in Sylhet. 

She was speaking at a weekly meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec), which approved the project. 

According to the project proposal, Shah Amanat International Airport is needed heavy equipment to extend the flying information region of South East Zone.

The Dhaka airport will need a new air traffic control in place of the old one, the proposal added.

The project titled “Improvement of security of airports” will help beef up the security of passenger and cargo aircraft at the airports.  

Chaired by the prime minister at the NEC Conference Room at the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, the meeting approved 10 other projects, including one worth of Tk8,052 crore.

The major projects include Siddirganj 335MW combined cycle power plants project, Chattogram-Feni-Bakhrabad parallel transmission pipeline, and warehouse construction for the temporary preservation of chemical products.
