Police arrested three alleged arms smugglers with 3 revolvers and 16 rounds of bullets from Jatrabari area in the capital on Friday evening.
The detainees are Abdul Shahid (40), Dulal Mia (38) and Ansar Mia (40).
Abdul is the president of a voluntary group in Jagannathpur upazila under Sunamganj district. Ansar is the joint convener of Juba Dal, youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, of the same upazila. They are also co-proprietor of a stone business.
Dulal Mia, a CNG driver, is working as a carrier in the gang.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Jahangir Alam, said, “We have got names of other members of this gang. Arab Ali is the mastermind of the arms smuggling ring.
He has created a strong network countrywide.”
He also said, “The gang members regularly visit Sunamganj market as it is near to the border. In the name of selling commodities, they buy arms from Indian smuggler groups. They use this area as a new route for smuggling.”
According to a police source, the gang is also involved in contract killing.
Recently, a member of the gang named Amin Mia was contacted by a woman’s former husband to kill the woman in exchange for Tk8 lakh.
Police collected evidence that the man, living in London, has already sent Tk30 thousand to Amin.
A case was filed with Jatrabari police station. Police are trying to arrest Arab Ali and Amin Mia.
CTTC source said the revolvers are very exclusive.
After primary investigation, Shahid confessed that they bought per revolver at Tk20,000 from the border market the sell it for Tk40,000. The local price of the revolver is Tk70,000.
Different local criminal groups collect arms from them.
