‘They should kill me too’

After being roughened up by the police, murdered student Abrar Fahad's younger brother Faiyaj vented his anger in a Facebook post.   

Questioning why an additional superintendent of police swooped down on him and his family, Fayaj wrote, "I demand justice and if the authorities cannot give it to me, they should kill me too, so that my parents do not have to lament twice." 

Faiyaj was beaten up on Wednesday when a clash broke out between the villagers and the law enforcers. 

The clash erupted when the vice-chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) went to meet the deceased student's family at his village home in Kushtia.    

After offering special prayers to Abrar's grave at Kumarkhali of the district, the vice-chancellor headed for Abrar's house at Raydanga village. After arriving, Abrar's father and brother asked him why he was not present when Abrar was found dead at Buet.

Situation heated up when the villagers stopped the vice-chancellor asking him the same question. Clashes erupted as police tried to disperse the agitated mob.  

Five people including Abrar's younger brother Faiyaj and his cousin's wife were injured in the brawl.

On early hours of Monday, Abrar, 22, a second-year-student of electrical and electronics engineering department was allegedly beaten to death in his dormitory Sher-E-Bangla Hall.

A total of 10 Chhatra League leaders of Buet unit was detained as Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a case with Chawkbazar police station on the same night.
