The intern doctors of MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet have gone on strike over allegations of assault on an intern doctor and attack on two students of the medical college.

The students of the medical college declared boycotting classes and exams over the incident Tuesday (2 August).

Protesting student Shah Asim Kennedy said two relatives of a patient assaulted an intern doctor on Sunday. One of the assaulters was handed over to police.

"Following the incident, some outsiders beat up several students of the college on Monday night that left two students seriously injured. Injured Rudra Nath and Naimur Rahman are undergoing treatment at the hospital," Kennedy said.

Protesting the attack, the students staged demonstrations and put barricades on the road in front of the hospital since Monday night. Later, the intern doctors announced the strike and joined the demo.

The doctors had postponed the strike till 2pm Tuesday following the detention of two assaulters and assurance from the administration. Later, they declared to continue the strike as they could not reach a consensus in a meeting with the administration on Tuesday afternoon.

Brigadier General Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan, director of MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, said, "We agree with all demands of interns and students but it will take some time to implement all the demands."

He said medical services at the hospital are not being disrupted due to the strike.
