8 expelled BNP leaders elected councillors in Sylhet, 5 in Rajshahi

Eight expelled BNP leaders in Sylhet and five in Rajshahi have won the post of councillors in the city polls held on Wednesday.

They were expelled from the party for violating party discipline by participating in the city polls.

In addition, five candidates of Jamaat-e-Islami also won in the Sylhet city polls.

Awami League-backed candidates won a landslide victory in the Sylhet City Corporation elections, winning 61% of the councillor seats and the mayoral post by a large margin. 

In Sylhet, Awami League councillor candidates won in 26 out of 42 wards in the election. The political identity of some candidates could not be known.

Awami League candidates emerged victorious by huge margins in the city corporation elections in Rajshahi as well. Awami League's AHM Khairuzzaman Liton was elected the mayor for the third term.

Out of 30 wards, 22 Awami League backed candidates won the councillor posts while Workers Party candidate won one councillor post and expelled BNP leaders secured five councillor posts.

Two other winners - former Jubo Dal leader Shahidul Islam and BNP supporter Akhtaruzzaman - were not expelled.
