Sramik League leader shot dead in Bagerhat
Police said no case has been registered over the killing, but efforts are underway to identify the gunmen.
A local leader of the Bangladesh Sramik League – a wing of activity-banned Bangladesh Awami League – was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Mollahat upazila last night (14 March).
The victim, Sohag Sheikh, 42, son of Daud Sheikh of Udaypur village in Mollahat, owned a corrugated tin shop at Mollahat Bazar. He was the general secretary of the upazila unit of the Sramik League.
Md Abu Russel, additional superintendent of police (Crime and Ops) in Bagerhat, said at least six bullet marks were found on the victim's body.
He said no case has been registered over the killing, but efforts are underway to identify the gunmen.
According to locals, Sohag was attacked around 10:30pm while returning home on a motorcycle after closing his shop at Chourangi intersection in the upazila headquarters.
The attackers, who arrived on a motorcycle, opened fire on Sohag from the front near the Paner Haat area, leaving him critically injured. He was taken to the Mollahat Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
His body was sent to the morgue of the Bagerhat 250-bed District Hospital, where an autopsy was completed this afternoon (15 March).
Earlier, on 7 March, police recovered the body of a sales representative named Nur Islam, 27, with gunshot wounds from Sohag's sanitary and hardware shop.
