Seven sacks of government rice seized in Bhola, one arrested

A case was filed with Lalmohan police station against UP member Jewel and his father in this connection

Police today arrested a person and seized seven sacks of government rice meant for sale to the poor under a government programme from the house of a union parishad (UP) member in Lalmohan upazila of the district.

The arrestee is Nannu, father of Jewel, the member of 5 no ward of Badarpur UP.

Officer-in-Charge of Lalmohan Police Station, Mir Khairul Kabir said upon receiving a phone call to the helpline '999' about the misappropriation, a team of police raided the house of Jewel and seized five sacks of rice after digging the soil under his bed and two others from behind his house.

Sensing the danger, the UP member fled away. Later, police detained his father for questioning. 

Police also found seven empty sacks labelled with the food department and seven food programme cards at the house.

Later, deputy assistant agriculture officer Shakawat Hossain filed a case with Lalmohan police station against Jewel and his father in this connection, said OC Mir Khairul Kabir. 

A day ago, another member of the same union parishad was jailed for misappropriating 15 sacks of government rice meant for the poor. 

After recovery of rice, a case was filed against four people, including Badarpur UP Chairman Faridul Haque Talukder and his nephew Omar, who is the member of 6 no ward of the UP.
