Saudi compensates Tk4.52cr for 3 Bangladeshi families

Three Bangladeshi affected families of Saudi crane accident on Thursday received Tk4.52crore from the Saudi government as compensation.

At least 107 people died and more than 230 people were injured when a crane collapsed in the Muslim holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia in September 2015.

The huge red crane crashed into part of the Grand Mosque - the largest in the world - that was filled with hajj pilgrims at the time.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen handed over the cheques at a programme at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary Dr AK Abdul Momen were also present.

The Saudi government compensated Tk 2.26 crore for the family of a Bangladeshi who was killed in the accident while Tk 1.13 crore each for the two injured Bangladeshis.

Rubina Akhter Chowdhury, whose husband Md Abul Kashem was killed in the accident, received a cheque of TK 2.26 crore.

Sarder Abdur Rouf and M Nazimuddin, who suffered injuries during the accident, received Tk 1.13 crore each from the Foreign Minister.

Foreign Minister Dr Momen said Bangladesh enjoys a very good relation with Saudi Arabia that helped get the good amount of compensation.
