Two others accused in the case, Abdullah Al Baki and Zahirul Islam alias Tikka Khan, died in the course of the trial

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh on Thursday sentenced two people to death, including a former Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker from Satkhira, for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

Sentenced to death are former Jamaat leader Abdul Khaleq Mandol and Khan Rokonuzzaman.

Convicted Rokonuzzaman is absconding while Khaleq is in jail now.

A three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Md Shahinur Islam, handed down the verdict after it found the accused guilty of the charges brought against them for committing murder, rape, abduction and torture in Satkhira during the Liberation War.

Abdul Khaleq Mandol, who has been in jail since his arrest in June 2015, was produced before the tribunal when the verdict was announced.

Charges were framed against four accused in this case on 5 March, 2016. However, two of them, Abdullah Al Baki and Zahirul Islam alias Tikka Khan, died in the course of the trial.

Public Prosecutor Rezia Sultana Chaman sought maximum punishment of the accused.

Lawyer Abdus Sobhan Tarafdar represented Khaleq Mandol in court while state-appointed lawyer, Gazi MH Tamim, moved for the accused fugitive, Khan Rokonuzzaman.
