Rupganj gang rape: 3 including local Chhatra League leader arrested
Agitated locals and victim’s schoolmates today staged a demonstration in the area to demand justice for the victim
Police today arrested three people, including a local Chhatra League leader, for allegedly gang-raping a ninth grader for two days after abducting her at Rupganj in Narayanganj.
The victim's father on Saturday filed a case in this regard against six people, including two unknown ones, with the Rupganj police station.
The three arrestees are Tousif, a son of Badal Mia from Gandharbpur area, Afzal, a son of late Abdul Hamid from Karnogop area, and Abu Sufian Sohan, a son Abul Kalam from Rupshi Pradan Bari area.
Among them, Abu Sufian is a vice-president of the Tarabo municipality unit of the Chhatra League – the student front of the ruling party Awami League.
Meanwhile, agitated locals and the victim's schoolmates today formed a human chain, blockaded roads and staged a demonstration in Gandharbpur area to demand justice for the victim.
Later, they called off their demonstration after Rupganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Momtaz Begum assured them of awarding exemplary punishment to the rapists.
According to the case statement, Tousif, one of the accused, borrowed Tk500 from the victim a few days ago. On Thursday afternoon last, she went to the Gandharbpur bus stand to get back the money from Tousif.
On her way back home, Tousif, Afzal, Abu Sufian, Tanvir and 2-3 more unidentified people forcefully picked her up on a microbus.
They locked her up at two houses in Rupshi and Korngop areas and gang-raped her for two days.
On Friday night, they left her in Mouchak area of Shiddhirganj. Later, she was rescued by her family from the area.
Rupganj police station Inspector (Operation) Rafiqul Haque said they have been trying to arrest the other accused.
