Rohingya leader Mohibullah murder accused dies in Ctg jail

An accused in the Rohingya leader Mohibullah murder case has died at Chattogram central jail.

The deceased is Moulvi Jakaria, 53, son of late Abdul Karim, a refugee of Ukhia Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar.

Dewan Mohammad Tariqul Islam, the jailer of Chattogram Central Jail, told The Business Standard that Jakaria died inside the jail in the early hours of Sunday while undergoing treatment. He was a cancer patient.

The jailer said he was transferred to Chittagong Jail a few days ago. Jakaria was the 14th accused in the murder case. 

Rohingya leader Mohibullah was shot dead by some gunmen at his office in Lambasia Rohingya camp-1 in Ukhia on 29 September 2021.

Later victim's brother Habibullah filed a murder case with the Ukhia police station accusing 25 unidentified people.

Police arrested 15 people in connection with the murder, including Jakaria who allegedly issued a fatwa (religious edict) to remove Mohibullah from the earth just a week before the murder.

The trial in the murder case began on 11 September after police submitted the chargesheet against 29 accused on 13 June this year.

Muhibullah was the chairman of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights (ARSPH). He also played a significant role in the repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar.
