Road accidents claim 468 lives in April amid Covid-19 lockdown: Report

At least 468 people were killed and 507 injured in 432 accidents on the country's roads and highways in April amid the Covid-19 induced lockdown, according to Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity. 

In the same month of April, six people were killed in eight railway accidents. At least 38 people were also killed and nine injured, with two others reported missing, in 14 accidents on the waterways of Bangladesh.

A total of 512 people were killed and 516 injured, in 454 road, rail, and waterways accidents in the country last month, said a report of the Road Traffic Monitoring Cell of the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity.

The organisation disclosed the information on Sunday based on reports published online and in national and local dailies.

Of the victims- 112 drivers, 82 pedestrians, 38 women, 26 students, 36 transport workers, 42 children, two leaders of various political parties, seven law enforcement personnel, and four teachers, died in these accidents.

According to the data, there were 221 truck and covered van accidents, 55 CNG autorickshaw accidents, 144 motorbike accidents, 55 battery-run rickshaw and easy bike accidents,  64 human hauler accidents, 30 private cars accidents, and 20 bus accidents. 

The highest number of road accidents took place on 8 April. On this day, 26 road accidents killed 26 people and left 33 people injured. The least number of road accidents happened on 14 April when six accidents claimed 10 lives and left six people injured.
