In order to celebrate the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr and the extended general holidays, people have started leaving Dhaka, said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.

But that should not be allowed to happen for the greater interest of the people, the IGP added.

"The prime minister has issued directives for the overall betterment of the people, and those should be followed," said the IGP, adding, "The mass people should follow the government directives and health rules."

The IGP made the remarks at a videoconference with the field-level high officials of Bangladesh Police on Sunday. The videoconference began at 11am and lasted until 1.30pm.

A detailed discussion of the overall activities of the Bangladesh Police during this Covid-19 pandemic was held in the online meeting.

Benazir Ahmed ordered all the police officers to ensure that nobody can enter or exit from Dhaka until further government directives.

Similarly, all the districts and metropolitan cities will implement the same rule for the greater benefit of the people, he added.

The inspector general also emphasised checking that the shopping malls and markets are abiding by the health directives and rules properly.

He also directed relevant authorities to implement government directives and health rules in all spheres.

In the beginning of his speech, the IGP prayed for the salvation to the departed souls of Bangladesh Police, who sacrificed their lives to safeguard the people of Bangladesh.

"Bangladesh Police members are smilingly risking their lives to provide security to the country people. And, many of them have already been infected by coronavirus," he said.

Benazir also assured of proper medical treatment and welfare of the Covid-19 infected police members.

A Standing Operating Procedure (SOP) has been sent to all the police units. The SOP was made following successful polices of Covid-19 overcoming countries and international agencies.

The IGP instructed to follow the SOP properly.

He also asked police members to assure their protection while performing duties.

"It is a chance to serve the country and countrymen. Get your permanent berth in the heart of people by utilising the opportunity," said Benazir.

The IGP also warned them against all sorts of corruption.

"You should take policing to the doorstep of people. Bit-policing will be activated soon. Police officers will be nominated in union and wards to accelerate union and ward-based law enforcing activities. As a result, police will be accountable more," the IGP added.

Police should always take the side of the countrymen as they are taking now, Benazir added further.
