High Court asks Bangladesh Railway

The High Court (HC) has fixed October 24 as the deadline for submitting a report by the Bangladesh Railway (BR) on the recent train accident in Moulvibazar.

The HC asked the BR to specify the measures taken in the aftermath of the disaster and also to explain why its failure to repair railway bridges and culverts should not be considered illegal.

Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury and Md Ashraful Kamal jointly made the ruling on Monday.

Advocate Md Tajul Islam represented the writ petitioner Faiz Uddin, a Supreme Court lawyer and Moulivabazar resident, in the court.

Faiz Uddin filed the writ in the interest of public welfare on July 6.

On June 23, the Dhaka-bound Upaban Express suffered a disastrous accident on the Barachhara Bridge in Kulaura sub-district of Moulvibazar, leaving at least five passengers dead.
