Railway employee detained in Chattogram for ‘embezzling Tk 1 crore’
On Saturday night, railway Nirapatta Bahini (RNB) detained Faisal Mahbub, 35, on allegations of embezzling the salaries and allowances of the railway’s east zone employees.
Bangladesh Railway authorities have detained a junior accounts officer at its Pahartali accounts branch in Chattogram for allegedly misappropriating at least Tk1 crore.
Railway Nirapatta Bahini (RNB) detained Faisal Mahbub, 35, on Saturday night, on allegations of embezzling the salaries and allowances of the railway's east zone employees.
RNB Chief Zahirul Islam Bhuiyan said that during preliminary interrogation, Faisal confessed to opening a fake account and embezzling Tk1 crore.
According to railway sources, Faisal joined the branch as a junior accounts officer in 2012.
From September 2020 to March this year, he allegedly transferred the salaries and allowances of the employees to his own bank account instead of the employees' accounts.
The railway's accounts are maintained by a particular software. On Friday, the railway authorities found several crores of taka missing.
Preliminary investigation showed evidence of the embezzlement and Faisal was arrested, said sources.
Jahangir Hossain, general manager of the railway's east zone, told TBS that the exact amount misappropriated, was yet to be calculated.
"But we were initially able to confirm that he had embezzled more than Tk1 crore. Faisal is currently in the railway's custody. Preparations are underway to file a case against him," he said.
A two-member probe committee was formed on Sunday. The committee will submit its report within the next three days, he added.
