Won’t tolerate anti-sculpture statements, chaos: Hasan Mahmud

Information Minister Hasan Mahmud has said those who cannot tolerate the Bangabandhu are speaking against the construction of his sculpture.

So, they have vandalised a sculpture of the Bangabandhu. But these statements, chaos will not be tolerated anymore, he said while addressing a discussion on Wednesday.

The event was organised marking the 81st birthday of Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani, the founding chairman of Jubo League, organised by Bangabandhu Cultural Alliance at the National Press Club.

The information minister said, "As the country moves forward, the forces defeated in 1971 have resumed their activities. During the 1971 war, these defeated forces issued fatwas calling the freedom fighters infidels, hypocrites, violators of Islam and so on."

He also said sculptures have been a part of tradition in this country since the British-Pakistan period. Different Muslim countries also follow the tradition of sculptures.

"We left behind the communal state system in 1971. So, the defeated communal forces will not be allowed to stand on their own feet in this country."

"The BNP also made sculpture of Ziaur Rahman when the party had been in power. But they are not clearing their stance on the sculpture issue now. If BNP does not clarify its stance, people will think the party is fuelling anti-sculptural activities," he opined.
