BNP-backed candidate Golam Mohammad Siraj won in Bogura-6 constituency by-election on Monday.

He bagged 89,742 votes while his nearest competitor Awami League-nominated candidate T Zaman Niketa got 32,297 votes.

The newly elected member of parliament, Siraj, has congratulated Election Commission officials, other candidates and the law enforcement agencies for conducting a free and fair election.

How the parliamentary seat fell vacant

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected from the constituency in the 11th national election held on December 30 last year.

But Fakhrul refrained from taking oath within the stipulated 90 days of parliament going into its first sitting.

On April 30, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury declared the Bogura-6 constituency vacant. Later on May 8, the Election Commission fixed June 24 for the by-election.
