Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, standing committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has said the Awami League has repeatedly killed democracy in Bangladesh.

"By killing democracy, the Awami League founded Baksal after independence, destroying the spirit of the Liberation War. In the same manner, it has killed democracy in this country over the last 12 years," he maintained.

Dr Mosharraf was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a free medical services, free medicine distribution and volunteer blood donation programme organised by the BNP in collaboration with Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) and Ziaur Rahman Foundation.

It was held in the auditorium of National Press Club on Saturday, on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Independence.

He also said the Awami League has been misinforming the new generation for the last decade by distorting the history of the Liberation War.

The senior member of the BNP went on to say they would protect the spirit of independence, reestablish democracy and return the ownership of this country to the people once again.

"We will wage a movement to overthrow this government," he declared.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attended the programme as chief guest, while BNP chairperson's Adviser Prof Dr Farhad Halim Donar presided over it.
