The Awami League has been distorting the history of the Liberation War in a very well-planned manner, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

"The Liberation War did not take place only under the leadership of the Awami League. We do not deny the 7 March, but the speech alone did not earn the country independence," he further said.

The BNP secretary general said this while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of free medical services, free medicine distribution and voluntary blood donation programme at the auditorium of the National Press Club on Saturday morning.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in collaboration with Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) and Ziaur Rahman Foundation organised the programme marking the golden jubilee of the country's independence.

Mirza Fakhrul said the independence did not come because of a single Awami League leader.

"The true history is that independence came through the fight of mass people of this country. The one who called for this war on 26 March 1971 is martyred president Ziaur Rahman," he said.

Mirza Fakhrul criticised Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and said Quader talks about the BNP every day, but again he says that there is no existence of the BNP in the country.

He further added that many Awami League leaders left the party after the independence as it destroyed democracy.

Begum Khaleda Zia is under house arrest now, he claimed, adding she has been detained as the Awami League is afraid of losing power.

BNP chairperson's adviser Prof Farhad Halim Donar presided over the programme while Prof Harun Al Rashid moderated it.

Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, BNP chairperson's adviser Abdus Salam, Juba Dal's Dhaka North President SM Jahangir and Chhatra Dal President Fazlur Rahman Khokon and its General Secretary Iqbal Hossain Shyamal, among others, were also present.
