At least 15 leaders and activists were injured as police baton charged on a procession in Noakhali's Companyganj today.

The procession was organised by Abdul Quader Mirza, mayor of Basurhat Municipality and younger brother of Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, supporting a day-long hartal.

At 7:30am, Mirza Quader's supporters marched in front of the Companiganj police station from Rupali Chattar in Basurhat Bazar.

Companiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mir Zahidul Haque Rony said that Quader Mirza came to the police station threatening to expel the OC and the inspector (investigation), and uttered obsce⁸ne words at the policeman.

When Quader Mirza tried to cause chaos by attacking senior police officers, the hartal supporters were dispersed to control the situation.

Meanwhile, the district administration deployed two executive magistrates in Companiganj to keep the situation under control. Besides, 40 members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and 110 policemen have been additionally deployed in the area.
