Police withhold filing case against Hefazat leaders for CID reports

The complaint against Brahmanbaria District Committee President Sajidur Rahman and General Secretary Mubarak Ullah of Hefazat-e-Islam was not accepted as case under Digital Security Act as the Facebook links mentioned in the complaint has been sent to Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for investigation.

"Letter is being sent to CID in Dhaka to investigate whether there was any anti-state or provocative post," said MD Shahzahan, Inspector (investigation) of Brahmanbaria Model Police Station.

"Next legal step will be taken depending on the report," he added.

A complaint for filing the case under digital security act was submitted against 14 people including Sajidur Rahman, Mubarak Ullah and 150 anonymous people on Saturday.

Brahmanbaria-3 constituency lawmaker RAM ObaidulMuktadir Chowdhury filed the complaint.

Advocate Abdul Jabbar Mamun, legal secretary of Brahmanbaria city Awami League, submitted the statement on behalf of lawmaker Muktadir.

According to the statement, the leaders and activists of Hefazat-e-Islam incited mayhem  in Brahmanbaria from 26 to 28 March centering the Golden Jubilee of Independence and the visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh.

During the mayhem, they used firearms, gunpowder, and various combustible substances and caused severe damage to public property in the district.

The statement mentioned that these violence were incited as a part of a conspiracy to oust the government.

It also added that under the direction of Maulana Sajidur Rahman, Mufti Mubarak Ullah, and other accused, cyber terrorism was organised on various Facebook pages and news portals to create agitation among the people.

These cyber-crimes facilitated the circulation of hate speech against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bangladeshi government and as a result, the law and order situation in Brahmanbaria deteriorated.
