PM proposes creation of a fund to revive cinemas
An Ecnec meeting on Tuesday approved five projects involving Tk2,570 crore

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has proposed setting up a fund to reopen closed movie theatres; if the owners wish to.
The prime minister has suggested undertaking a project for a special fund to provide loans to cinema hall owners.
The premier mentioned the fund's formation during the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council's (Ecnec) meeting on Tuesday, while approving a project of the Department of Mass Communication titled "Strengthening Promotion Programme for Rural Development."
"Many cinemas have been closed in the country. The halls are in a dilapidated condition. The prime minister wants to have them renovated under a big project," Planning Minister MA Mannan briefed reporters following the Ecnec meeting, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
He urged the cinema owners to come forward in this regard.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal and Planning Minister MA Mannan joined the Ecnec meeting via videoconference from Ganabhaban–the official residence of the premier.
Other ministers and secretaries attended the meeting from the National Economic Council conference room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
