Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has proposed setting up a fund to reopen closed movie theatres; if the owners wish to.
The prime minister has suggested undertaking a project for a special fund to provide loans to cinema hall owners.
The premier mentioned the fund's formation during the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council's (Ecnec) meeting on Tuesday, while approving a project of the Department of Mass Communication titled "Strengthening Promotion Programme for Rural Development."
"Many cinemas have been closed in the country. The halls are in a dilapidated condition. The prime minister wants to have them renovated under a big project," Planning Minister MA Mannan briefed reporters following the Ecnec meeting, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
He urged the cinema owners to come forward in this regard.
