The Ministry of Commerce and Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) have taken an initiative to sell onions at fair prices for middle-class buyers from online shops.

In collaboration with the E-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB), the country's reputed grocery e-commerce shops will have the opportunity to sell imported onions at low prices.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, confirmed the matter at a press conference at the Commerce Ministry on September 16.

The minister said, "The country still has a stockpile of six lakh tonnes of onions and there is no reason to panic. Onions will be imported from Myanmar and Turkey shortly. The imported onions will be sold at low prices through e-commerce as well as TCB."

Those online companies, who have their own warehouses, extensive delivery capabilities and e-commerce websites, have been selected for this service.

Ten percent of the government's imported onions will be supplied through e-commerce companies. It is expected that 10,000 tonnes of onions will be sold from online shops under this initiative. The amount will be increased later.
