Onions are being sold at a record price in Dhaka kitchen markets with per kg selling for Tk200-220.
Several customers said never before has the onion price gone over Tk200 per kg. Locally grown onions were being sold for Tk160-170 per kg just a day ago.
On Thursday around 11:30am, the price of locally grown onions were set at Tk162 per kg at the Agora Super Shop in Segunbagicha. Just ten minutes later, the price was changed to Tk204.
Authorities concerned said they changed the onion price at the shop based on the current market price.
A Segunbagicha vegetable vender, Arifur Rahman is selling onions for Tk220. At Rampura kitchen market, locally grown onions are being sold for Tk200 and imported onions are priced at Tk180.
Due to the high price, some buyers have been seen arguing with the vendors. One buyer, Shamsul Arefin, came to buy onions at Rampura kitchen market. He asked the seller, "You were selling onions at Tk160 per kg just a day ago, why are you asking for Tk200 today?"
And the seller told him, "Take it or leave it, I don't have the time to argue."
