One killed as BNP men, police clash in Narayanganj

A man was killed and several others were injured in a clash that erupted this morning between BNP men and police near Railgate No 2 of Narayanganj Sadar upazila.

The deceased was identified as Shaon, 24, hailed from the area.

According to media reports, the young man got injured during the clash and died shortly afterwards. 

The clash broke out around 10.30am after the law enforcers tried to prevent local BNP leaders and activists from holding a rally marking the party's 44th founding anniversary. 

At the time, police fired tear shells and rubber bullets in response to the brickbats hurled at them by the activists.

Meanwhile, at least 30 people including journalists and policemen were injured during a violent clash that ensued between BNP men and police in Manikganj.

Reportedly, Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Abdur Rouf Sarkar and two other members of police got injured, besides at least 25 BNP leaders and activists. 

In order to bring the situation under control, police fired tear gas shells and charged batons to chase the demonstrators away. Later, five BNP activists were arrested over the incident. 

A similar clash has been reported in Netrokona, where 22 people got hurt including Additional Superintendent of Police (Admin) Md Fakhruzzaman Juwel.

Netrokona BNP joint convener SM Moniruzzaman Dudu said, "We were carrying out our programme peacefully when police came and started charging us with batons without any reason. Later rubber bullets and tear shells were also fired."

During the attack, at least 20 activists were injured, including district Jubo Dal Joint Convener Sujan Chowdhury, Chhatra Dal Netrakona (government college branch) Convenor Habibur Rahman, Municipal Chhatra Dal Vice-President Bappi, Pranto Pathan, Antor Pathan, Hanasul Bari Farooq, BNP leaders Abdul Khaleq and Golam Mostafa.

District Superintendent of Police Faiz Ahmed said, "Preparations are underway to file a case in this incident.  Besides, additional police have been deployed in the area."

Earlier, two BNP leaders in Bhola died following a clash with police. On 31 July, local Swechchasebak Dal leader Abdur Rahim was killed in a clash with police in front of their district party office in Bhola. At the time, many got injured including Nure Alam, president of district unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD). Later, he died at a hospital in Dhaka while undergoing treatment for bullet injuries.
