3 killed, 2 critically injured in BSRM factory accident

Three workers have been killed and two others critically injured in an accident at BSRM factory in Chattogram's Jorarganj area on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Nazrul Islam, 24, Gias Uddin 24 who died early today and Abul Kashem, 62, died on Saturday evening.

They had been working with melted iron ore, when the molten iron accidentally fell on the workers.

The injured are: Nur Hossain, 30, and Mohiuddin, 28. They are in critical condition and being treated at the Burn and Plastic Surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).   

Earlier, critically injured Giyas Uddin, Nur Hossain, Mohiuddin, and Nazrul Islam, were admitted at the Burn and Plastic Surgery unit of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH)  following the accident on Saturday afternoon. As their condition deteriorated later at night, they were suggested to be transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).   

"On the way to Dhaka –when they reached at Cumilla-- Nazrul Islam and Gias Uddin passed away," said Omar Soaheeb, public relations assistant manager of BSRM.

However, the injured Nur Hossain and Mohiuddin have been admitted at DMCH's Burn and Plastic Surgery unit, said Omar Soaheeb.

Dr Mithun Palit from CMCH's Burn Unit said, "The accident burned the tracheas [windpipes] of the injured workers. The workers are in critical condition."

"Giyas Uddin suffered from 98 percent burns and Nazrul Islam suffered 100 percent burns. However, Mohiuddin and Nur Hossain are suffering from respectively 80 percent and 60 percent burns," he added.

"All of the injured have inhalation injuries."

Deputy Managing Director of BSRM Tapan Sengupta said, "I have heard about the accident. But we still don't know what caused it. We are trying to identify the reason it occurred."

Meanwhile, Assistant Sub-inspector of Jorarganj police station Md Farid said the authorities went to the scene of the accident to try and identify why it occurred.

BSRM, on their social media page said, "BSRM Group is greatly shocked and saddened by the tragic incident of an accident that took place in BSRM Plant in Mirsarai on 06 June 2020. BSRM always commits to safety in its premises and have created a team to investigate this unfortunate accident. BSRM Group extends its sincere condolences to the bereaved families of the victims and conveys its sympathy to those affected from this incident. It's a sad day for the whole BSRM family. We solicit prayers for the people affected and their families. The Group assures to provide necessary support required to the injured."
