The incident took place around 12:30am on Wednesday

A youth died after a fire broke out in an office used to store octane in Chattogram.

The victim was identified as Md Jabed (18) from Cumilla district. He used to drive speedboat. The incident took place around 12:30am on Wednesday.

Utpal Kanti Barua, officer-in-charge of Patenga Police Station said, "Jabed worked as a rider under the Faruk Speedboat Services which is located on the bottom floor of Saima Shopping Center.

He used to take tourists out to the sea and slept in the office at night. There was also octane stored in the office for speedboat fuel.  On Wednesday night, the octane might catch on fire triggering Jabed's death as he could not manage to flee.

Ali Akbar, deputy assistant director of the Chattogram Fire Service said, "Being informed of the incident, five fire service units rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after an hour effort."

"We will investigate whether the company had a fire service certificate to store octane and take actions thereby. The body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy," said Utpal.

"The severity of the fire was high due to the octane. Firefighters found Jabed's charred body and handed over to the Patenga police station after the fire was extinguished," he further added.
