The first namaz-e-janaza was held at 12:20pm at Segunbagicha

Former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank and noted banker Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) early Wednesday. He was 82.

He breathed his last at 5:45am at the ICU of the hospital, confirmed BSMMU Deputy Director Khorshed Alam to The Business Standard. 

Ibrahim Khaled contracted with coronavirus on the last week of January and had strong Pneumonia. 

He was admitted to Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli earlier this month.

Later on 21 February, he was transferred to BSMMU as he started having other physical complications.

He was kept in life support for past few days at BSMMU as his condition deteriorated where he died today.

His body was taken at Central Kachi-Kanchar Mela in the capital's Segunbagicha at 11am today where the first namaz-e-janaza was held at 12:20pm, said Alpona Chowdhury, its general secretary.

The second namaz-e-janaza was held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Zohr prayer. 

Sayed Ahmmed, son of Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled said the third janaza will be held in Gopalganj before his burial. 

Ibrahim Khaled will be laid to rest at Gopalganj Sadar upazila.


Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled recently joined the Pubali Bank Limited as an independent director.

He was also the managing director of Pubali Bank Limited for the 2001-2006 period.

Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled had been associated with the banking system of Bangladesh for nearly six decades.

He also served the Bangladesh Krishi Bank, Agrani Bank and Sonali Bank as managing director.

He was the deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank from 1998 to 2001.

He also served the board of directors of Bangladesh Krishi Bank as the chairman.

Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled was awarded the Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah Gold Medal in 2009 and the Khan Bahadur Nawab Ali Chowdhury National Award in 2013 for his outstanding contribution to the banking sector.

He was born in Gopalganj in 1941.
