'Around 1,000 people have been persecuted in the name of this law'

Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury today urged the government to abolish the Digital Security Act (DSA) before 26 March, calling the amendment of the law a hoax.

He made the remark while speaking at a human chain formed in front of the National Press Club, organised by the National Democratic Party-NDP, demanding the annulment of DSA on Saturday morning.

"Around 1,000 people have been persecuted in the name of this law," Zafrullah Chowdhury said, adding, "To what extent a cartoonist and his cartoon can jeopardise a government that he was denied bail for ten months?"

Stating that no prison in the country provides adequate treatment, Dr Zafrullah said, "Detainees are supposed to die if they are tortured in police custody and are not served with proper healthcare."

He further urged the prime minister to bury the "black law".

Bangladesh Labor Party Chairman Mostafizur Rahman Iran, also present at the demo, said, "We don't want this government, who has been forcefully holding onto power and altering ballot results."

NDP Chairman KM Abu Taher said, "We do not want any amendment to the Digital Security Act, we want the act to be repealed."
