Police have rescued a newborn girl from a dustbin near Mostafa Colony in Bayezid Bostami area of the port city.

Local people informed the police of the girl after finding her in an abandoned condition on Sunday.

Officer-in-Charge of Bayezid police station Printon Sarker said the baby girl was taken to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCHs) after she had been rescued.

"After examining the girl's health condition, doctors reassured us that she is alright," said Nayek Hamidur Rahman from CMCH police outpost.

The hospital authorities urged the social service office to take initiative for the upbringing of the baby. Later, officials took the girl to a government shelter house for children.

The girl was sent to Roufabad Government Soto Moni Nibash, said Abhijeet Saha, Social Service Officer of the CMCH.

Meanwhile, police on Sunday recovered a newborn's body from under the Kanchan Bridge of Dinazpur city.

Locals saw the body -- rapped with a cloth -- float in the river. Later, some stray dogs attacked the body.

Locals recovered the body from the dogs and buried it.

After being informed of the matter, police exhumed the body and took it to Dinazpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Bazlur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Dinazpur Kotwali police station.
